How can you take your medical assistant qualifications?
There are different ways to become qualified as a medical assistant. Most assistants will join the AAMA and following completion of an accredited medical assistant training program will sit the CMA (AAMA) certification exam. Once you pass the exam, you have to recertify every 60 months either by sitting another examination or by completing a set number of hours of continuing professional education. If you have a lot of relevant experience i.e. more than five years, you could take the AMT or NHA certification exam without first completing a training program.

One is the size of the facility at which you work and the amount of experience you have will also have an impact. Usually uncertified medical assistants will be given the more menial tasks unless they have been working there for many years and have achieved a position of seniority. Usually those involved in medical assisting find that passing exams helps them to move away from the hygiene duties (washing floors and bedpans) to becoming more involved with patients. Some medical assistants will specialize in a certain field which can take up to two years of further study depending on the field they choose.
